If you have recently graduated with a qualification in environmental science, conservation biology, or geomatics and want to start a real career in conservation, the CapeNature Graduate Internship Programme 2026 is now open – with applications closing on 22 April 2026.
What this opportunity is about
CapeNature has opened two specialised graduate internships for young professionals who want to contribute to conservation science, biodiversity protection, and environmental management in the Western Cape. These are technical roles, not general administrative positions.
The first stream is Ecological Technician – Freshwater based at Jonkershoek Nature Reserve in Stellenbosch. The second is GIS Technologist based at the Cape Town Office.
Who should apply
This programme is for unemployed South African citizens with a valid EB08 driver’s licence. Requirements differ for each stream:
- Ecological Technician – Freshwater (Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, Stellenbosch): BSc Honours or MSc in Freshwater Ecology, Aquatic Science, or Conservation Biology, plus knowledge of the National Water Act.
- GIS Technologist (Cape Town Office): A Degree (NQF Level 7) in Geomatics, Environmental Management, or related ecological sciences, plus proficiency in ArcGIS and QGIS.
What you will gain
You will gain valuable hands-on experience working alongside experienced scientists and conservationists. The Freshwater stream involves ecological assessments, river and wetland monitoring, Water Use Licence compliance auditing, and building scientific databases from field data.
The GIS stream focuses on wildfire response mapping, invasive species monitoring, spatial data management, modernising historical datasets, and assisting municipalities with mapping alignment. Both roles let you contribute to major provincial reports such as the State of Conservation Report and the Catchment-to-Coast Strategy while developing technical skills that are highly transferable.
How to apply
Follow these steps to submit your application:
- Prepare your CV and ensure it clearly shows your relevant qualification, technical skills, and any fieldwork or volunteer experience.
- Gather your supporting documents: certified copy of your ID, academic transcripts, and driver’s licence.
- Submit everything through the official recruitment channel before the closing date.

Practical tips to improve your chances
If this is your first time applying for a technical internship, don’t worry. Many applicants struggle with highlighting the right experience on their CV. From experience, most successful candidates clearly demonstrate their technical knowledge and passion for the environment.
Highlight any volunteer work in national parks, university research projects, or experience with GPS systems and cartography. Since both roles involve fieldwork and travel, emphasise your willingness to work independently in rugged environments and your reliability.
Applications close on 22 April 2026. Prepare your documents today and submit your application through the official channels. This could be the professional opportunity that launches your career in conservation. Good luck – you’ve got this.
