South Africa’s skills gaps mean many young people are struggling to find paid work. That’s why South West Gauteng TVET College, together with FoodBev SETA, is launching a 36‑month apprenticeship programme that blends classroom learning with hands‑on jobs. If you’re under 35 and unemployed, this could be your ticket to a nationally recognised trade and a secure future.

What the programme is all about

The 2026 First Intake Apprenticeship Programme is a Centre of Specialisation (CoS) partnership between South West Gauteng TVET College and the Food and Beverages Manufacturing Sector Education and Training Authority (FoodBev SETA). You’ll study key engineering trades, earn a recognised qualification, and gain real work experience in the food and beverage industry.

Who can apply

  • Under 35 years old
  • Currently unemployed
  • Meet the academic requirements for the chosen trade (see below)
  • Pass the assessment process set by the college and SETA

Academic prerequisites vary by trade:

  • Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics
  • NCV Level 2–4 in the relevant trade
  • N2–N6 Engineering qualification in the relevant field

Students of South West Gauteng TVET College may receive extra consideration.

What you’ll gain

• A 36‑month, work‑integrated apprenticeship that leads to a national trade qualification.
• Hands‑on experience in a real workplace, boosting employability after graduation.
• A guaranteed employment contract under an ETQA agreement once you finish.
• The chance to work in the growing food and beverage sector, which is a high‑growth industry in South Africa.

How to apply – step by step

  1. Choose the trade you want: Fitter & Turner, Mechanical Fitter, or Electrician.
  2. Prepare the required documents:
    • Application letter stating the programme.
    • Updated CV.
    • Certified copy of your ID.
    • Certified copies of your academic qualifications.
    • Proof of address.
    • Proof of bank account details.
  3. Submit your application before the closing date, 13 March 2026.
  4. Attend any assessment tests and interviews as scheduled.
  5. Once accepted, sign your ETQA agreement and start your apprenticeship.

Practical tips to improve your chances

Many applicants struggle with incomplete or unclear paperwork. From experience, most successful candidates double‑check that every document is certified and legible before handing it in. If this is your first time applying, don’t worry – ask your school or community centre for help with certification.

For the electric trade, highlight any previous hands‑on experience or coursework in electricity. For the fitter trades, emphasize any mechanical or construction exposure. A clear, honest application letter that mentions your exact qualification (NCV, N2–N6) can set you apart.
